Understanding Sexual Orientation

Throughout life, growing up you can question your sexuality. However, through todays society, being a heterosexual is more acceptable so if your a homosexual, you'll sometimes try to cover it up and act as though your a heterosexual.

In the reading, to me it seemed as though it was showing how homosexuals are categorized. If your actually a straight guy and you decide to become bald, interested in music or art, nursing and etc, you would be mistaken for a homosexual. This was interesting and shocking to me at the same time. It shows you how stereotypical society can be.

Thursday while I was sick, I was watching Americas Next Top model and found myself applying everything I learned from class, to the show. It was pretty interesting to me because I realized I was applying my social imagination, without purposely trying to.

Two of the models were arguing and one of the girls called the opposite girl uneducated due to the way she talked. However, the girl said she went to a top school, I can't recall which school it was, and said she completed college.

This was another example in life that showed me how people are categorized. Just because the girl didn't talk proper, the way high educated people "should" talk, she was presumed to be uneducated. This shows you can't judge a book by its cover.

How Did Jews Become White Folks?

I picked this article because I've assumed Jews were already considered ' white Folks '. However, after reading this article it totally changed my assumption. It made me realize Jews always had it hard not only during the time of the holocaust, but when they migrated to New York. They weren't treated properly and was kept away from equal jobs. They went to top schools and were very educated. I assumed all Jews had money with the big houses, just like the whites have. Unfortunately the whites separated themselves from the Jews. They

"People Like Us"

Viewing the film, "People Like Us", shows you exactly how people in society categorize you. You have to fit in a certain class to fit in with particular people. For example, a lady in the film said she would never drive a Ford. If I wanted to be her friend, more than likely she wouldnt want to socialize me. Or if I was driving and came to a stop light next to her, she would probaly say to her self, Im low class. The film also shows how the world is divided and makes you wonder what  class you belong to or what the person next to you think of you. People in society always want to be on top or fit in. As for myself, I use to believe I was better than others because I went to a private school and being that it was my mother only paying for me to attend this private school, along with my brother. This also made me feel high class and think my mother had money. When people compliment my house and say I live in the suburbs, I would get this type of feeling of accomplishment. I made it appear as though I "got it like that". When new sneakers come out or whatever the new trend is, came out, I always made sure I was going to get it. Watching the film makes me feel like the people criticizing other people and thinking they are better than others make me feel like they are snobs and are to caught up in their social class. Being in this sociology class open my eyes up to realize I use to be one of those snobs. I wouldnt try to be better than anyone or think im better because what I have that the next person doesnt. I really enjoyed this film because it shows the different opinions of people who are in different classes and you can "Try" and get an understanding of why the "snobby" high class people act the way they do.

Deviance

Deviance is considered as breaking the social norms. Considering that being said, you can pretty much say everyone in society is deviant. Down to kids and adults. If you take a deeper look into the things your not suppose to do according to society, you would realize your deviant. As for myself, I cab admit I'm sometimes deviant. For example, your suppose to drive with a license, however, I drive alone with a permit.

Killing Us Softly & A Call to Men

"Killing Us Softly," is a documentary of a female speaker speaking about how woman have to look to be accepted in society. On advertisement, you have females looking better than what they naturally are. They would have no scars or blemishes. Society always make you realize as a female how important it is to be pretty. You cant just look any way without being judged or accepted. Also, it talks about how females bodies are used to sell things and makes it as though we are just objects. Its as though women arent really looked at for who they are and just being judge by society. To me, this documentary shows and make you realize how woman have to try to fit in with society. One minute your boobs are to big, small, pointy, saggy, or look like mosquito bites. Youcant win for loosing. Women need to be looked at as human beings and for how they are made because we are all created by the same person. GOD.

In the next documentary, "ACall to Men", its a male speaking on how men are suppose to be according to society and how woman are suppose to be. In society, men are suppose to be tough, strong, dominating, courageous, and be the leader. They are suppose to have the upper hand to females. The speaker spoke about a lot of true things on how society tries to form a man. If you cried as a little boy, chances were you would get yelled at and/or for crying and would be told crying is for girls. You can pretty much say men are suppose to be superordinate and women are suppose to be subordinate.  The speaker realizes how he tried to shape his son they way society tries to shape most boys, but in the end realized that it wasnt a good thing and that its just the way men are "suppose" to be. To me, a lot of guys who think they are to tough to cry or have a woman have the say, should view this documentary and realized they are just going according to society and should try to change it in some way.

Society

Society is usually just defined as a large number of people in a area. It can be organized by statuses and roles. But for everyone you have an achieved and ascribed role. Ascribed would be a role that you pretty much don't have control over. For example, your sex, race, or the family you were born into. However, for achieved, its something you chose to get. An example for this can be becoming a doctor. I believe society is made up by the type of role you fall in and the. Social structures can be said its formed by the super ordinate (has more power) role, over the subordinate (has less power) role. Through the week in class I've learned and realized, how society gave us certain roles, which weren't asked for, but have to act accordingly to the role. Having this class, opens my eyes and through traveling to school and home or just even being outside I think to myself that everything we do is an act and we're on stage performing.

Culture

Starting last week, my class was discussing culture and its relevance in society aside from culture just being where an individual is from. With culture, you have norms and values. As for values, we don;t always live up to them. However, for American values we share them as a priority. With norms, it tells you how to behave. For instance, greeting someone in the morning can be a norm. Norms and values can guide our judgement towards others.

Who Am I?

I'm a strong young lady, who is determined to complete college and to become what ever it is I decide to become. Love, determination and always being focused makes up the person I am. The biggest influence in my life is my grandmother. She always know how to make a bad situation become better than what it is and always have inspirational words. When ever I feel like I can do something, she would give me the best advice that would make me stay focused and not let anything get me down. My goals and purpose in life is to be successful and to depend on no one but myself. My purpose in life is to serve God and try and do the right things in life.
